ABOUT KATIE

I started photographing in college in 2007. At the time, I was a fashion merchandising student, hoping to, one day, create beautiful displays for the windows of major department stores. One semester into my fashion degree, my roommate, best friend and graphic designer extraordinaire, asked me to help her with an art project. It was during that late-night portrait session and setting up a makeshift “studio” on our apartment balcony, that I had my “OMG” moment. I fondly look back on those images with horror (they are pretty bad!) and appreciation that I had the opportunity to experience the joy of capturing a portrait, even before I had the skills to execute it properly. Over the next two years, I spent all of my time (and money) honing my craft. As “ancient” as it may be, I was incredibly connected to film, the smell of the darkroom and the enchantment of watching a perfectly exposed image appear out of nothing in the chemicals. Throughout my college experience, I was drawn to portraiture especially. The ability to capture a person’s soul, their essence, to make a statement, to play dress up enticed and entranced me. I studied art history and fell in love with the beauty of the Renaissance, the moodiness of the Baroque and the intrigue of modern art. My goal as a photographer is to combine my background in fashion, my art history influences and my technical training to create breathtaking, timeless images.
